With age comes the pull of gravity in the upper arms causing what is sometimes called "bat wings". Grady Core, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board-certified plastic surgeon, performs brachioplasty at Core Plastic Surgery on people living in and around Birmingham and Mountain Brook who want toned, contoured arms.
Define Your Body
An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure in which the excess, hanging skin is excised, and the skin around the upper arms are pulled tighter to create more definition.
Benefits
With a brachioplasty Birmingham patients are able to experience the following benefits:
Ideal Candidates
The ideal candidates for an arm lift have excess skin on the upper arms that sags when doing anything that requires them to lift their arms. The skin makes the arms look larger than they are and may cause women to be too self-conscious about wearing sleeveless clothing.
Preparation
Prior to having an arm lift, it is necessary to meet with Dr. Core so that he can evaluate your arms and determine if brachioplasty is the best option. Once your procedure is scheduled, we provide you with detailed instructions to prepare for your arm lift.
Procedure
At Core Plastic Surgery in Birmingham Brachioplasty starts with an incision on the underside or back of the arm. The length varies depending on the amount of fat to be removed and how much excess skin there is. Using either liposuction or by excision, the fat is removed, and the skin is pulled tightly. Before closing the incision, a drain may be placed to prevent blood or fluid build-up. An arm lift procedure typically takes about three hours to complete.
Recovery
Dressings and bandages are applied to the incisions followed by compression garments to support the newly sculpted arms and minimize swelling. You should take it easy for a few days to allow the healing process to begin and avoid lifting anything or raising your arms over your head for a few weeks until the incisions have healed. If removable stitches are used, they are removed after one to two weeks.
Results
The results from an arm lift are immediately noticeable although there is some slight swelling and bruising. Once that fades, and the incisions have healed, the full results are more visible. The incisions fade over the following few months.
Cost
The cost of a brachioplasty varies in cost based on the extent of the procedure and whether it is done in conjunction with other procedures. We provide you with the cost during your consultation with Dr. Core along with our payment options. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards in addition to offering financing through CareCredit®.
