Birmingham, AL – Dr. Grady Core, a Birmingham plastic surgeon and one of the inventors of endoscopic plastic surgery, has once again developed improvements in the field of cosmetic surgery to make procedures as minimally invasive as possible. His latest development – called lateral access recontouring of the lower lid – is an alternative to conventional lower eyelid surgery. With his new technique in lower eyelid rejuvenation, he says the traditional risks of this surgery – such as lower lid retraction – are diminished. Dr. Core is paving the way for a new surgical strategy for all practitioners of lower eyelid rejuvenation surgery.
In both the classical method of eyelid surgery, which is called lower lid blepharoplasty, as well as another method called transconjunctival blepharoplasty, an incision is made that goes through some of the functional muscles of the lower lid. By developing a method of blepharoplasty that does not make an incision in these muscles, Dr. Core is able to rejuvenate the eye area while leaving the lid’s natural support system in place. Instead of making an incision through the retractor muscles or the pretarsal orbicularis muscle, Dr. Core makes a small incision beside the corner of the lower lid that allows him to go between the muscles and not disrupt their function.
In addition to altering the location of the surgical incision, Dr. Core is also making innovative strides in blepharoplasty by leaving the fat. Instead of removing the fat completely, which he says can cause the patient to actually look older, Dr. Core re-contours and re-shapes the fat, allowing the whole eye area to remain fuller and look more natural. These are advancements in blepharoplasty that Dr. Core has been practicing for over four years. He has performed this lateral-access blepharoplasty on over 100 patients, and provides patients seeking plastic surgery in Birmingham a new alternative for cosmetic eyelid rejuvenation.
